Qatar Confirms Interest in 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid

Qatar has officially confirmed its interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with its Olympic committee stating it is in “ongoing discussions” with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The announcement comes after the Middle Eastern nation successfully hosted the men’s football World Cup in 2022.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) released a statement on Tuesday emphasising the country's commitment to global sport. “This move underscores the State of Qatar’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Olympic and Paralympic Movements and its keen interest in playing an active role in the advancement of global sport,” the statement said.

Staging a Summer Games in Qatar's extreme heat may require a shift from the traditional June-July slot, similar to the 2022 World Cup which was held in November and December. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the QOC and chair of the bid committee, highlighted the country's readiness, noting that 95% of required sports infrastructure is already in place. “We have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100% readiness of all facilities,” he said.

Sheikh Joaan outlined the bid's long-term vision, stating: “Our objective goes beyond simply organising a successful event, we aim to deliver a global experience that reinforces the values of inclusivity, sustainability and international collaboration.” The new IOC president, Kirsty Coventry, said last month that the organisation would review the process for determining future Games hosts.
