Slovenian Siblings Domen and Nika Prevc Clinch Olympic Gold in Ski Jumping Team Event

Slovenia has successfully defended its gold medal in the mixed team ski jumping competition at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, with sibling stars Domen and Nika Prevc leading the charge. In a historic achievement, they became the first brother and sister to win a medal on the normal hill at the same Olympic Games, showcasing their dominance in the sport.

Norway and Japan Secure Podium Finishes

Norway captured the silver medal with a team that included Marius Lindvik, a jumper who was suspended last year due to a jumpsuit-tampering scandal that caused significant controversy in the sport. Japan earned its third bronze medal in ski jumping at these Games, adding to their impressive haul. The Norwegian squad also featured Anna Odine Stroem, the women's gold medalist from Saturday, and Kristoffer Eriksen Sundal and Eirin Maria Kvandal.

Prevc Siblings Overcome Previous Challenges

Despite arriving as the top-ranked ski jumpers globally and both being defending world champions, the normal hill had not been their strongest venue until Tuesday. Nika Prevc finished second in the individual event on Saturday, while Domen placed sixth on Monday. However, they delivered stellar performances in the team event, supported by teammates Anze Lanisek and Nika Vodan, whose impressive jumps helped Slovenia maintain a lead into the final round.

Controversy and Redemption in the Competition

The Norwegian team's inclusion of Marius Lindvik brought attention to last year's scandal, where he and teammate Johann André Forfang were suspended for three months after coaches were caught tampering with jumpsuits to enhance performance. Although not charged, they were criticized for not questioning the adjustments. Meanwhile, Japan's team, including Ren Nikaido and Nozomi Maruyama, saw redemption for Sara Takanashi, who had narrowly missed a medal in the previous Olympics.

Historic Family Legacy in Ski Jumping

This victory marks a second historic moment for the Prevc family, as Nika's earlier silver medal made her the first woman to join brothers in winning Olympic medals in ski jumping. Their older brother, Peter, who retired, previously led Slovenia to gold in Beijing, with Nika Vodan being the only current member from that squad. Ski jumping has been an Olympic sport since 1924, but women were only included in 2014, and the mixed team event debuted in 2022.

With four Olympic medalists now in the family, the Prevces have more opportunities ahead, including the large hill event next weekend and the men's super team event on February 16. Their success underscores Slovenia's growing prominence in winter sports and the enduring appeal of ski jumping on the global stage.
