Olympic champion Adam Peaty has set his sights firmly on competing at a fourth Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, revealing that his father-in-law, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, serves as a crucial source of inspiration. This ambitious goal comes after the swimmer recently contemplated stepping away from the sport entirely.
From Retirement Thoughts to Olympic Dreams
The 31-year-old athlete, who is back in action at the British Championships this week, admitted that he almost quit swimming before the 2024 Paris Games and again immediately following them. However, the addition of the 50m breaststroke to the Olympic schedule has buoyed his determination, leading him to confirm his participation in the 2028 event.
Ramsay's Influence on Peaty's Journey
Peaty, who married Ramsay's daughter Holly in December, spoke candidly about the chef's impact on his career. "(He's) very inspiring," Peaty told BBC Breakfast. "I think for him, it's obviously a very different way of life in terms of the business he has to do and the businesses he has to run. I take a lot of guidance. I look up to him a lot... in (terms of) sport, he knows the game is the game, that it doesn't lie. But it will humble you and you've got to work hard for those results."
He emphasised that the lessons learned from Ramsay extend beyond swimming, noting, "I know that whatever I learned through sport, those are the skills I can take into the rest of my life as well."
The Road to Los Angeles 2028
With an impressive collection of three Olympic gold and three silver medals, Peaty is dreaming of adding to his legacy in LA. "The Olympics is the one that excites me. That is the one that really gets me out of bed every day, the one I dream of," he added.
However, he acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating that the next two years will be "the hardest of my career." His strategy involves meticulous planning: "We have to set that path now. Two years out, it is about how much racing and experience can we gather to give the best performance in LA."
A Legacy in the Making
Widely recognised as Britain's greatest ever swimmer, Peaty has previously competed at three Olympic Games. Despite his accolades, he believes there is more to achieve, viewing a fourth Games as an opportunity to further cement his legacy in the sport.
As he prepares for the British Championships and beyond, Peaty's journey highlights the powerful role of personal inspiration and resilience in elite athletics, with Gordon Ramsay's influence proving pivotal in his renewed Olympic ambitions.
