Ombudsman, the 11-10 favourite, delivered a stunning performance to secure a second consecutive victory in the Prince of Wales's Stakes on the second day of Royal Ascot 2026. The five-year-old, trained by John and Thady Gosden and ridden by William Buick, became the first horse since 1995 to win the Group One feature twice in a row.
Dominant Display
Ombudsman faced a high-quality field including French raider Daryz (2-1) and Aidan O'Brien's triple Oaks heroine Minnie Hauk (15-2). However, the Gosden-trained star proved his superiority over 1m2f, storming to a four-length victory over Minnie Hauk. Daryz finished third, a further one and three-quarters lengths back, while Almaqam (7-1) was fourth.
The pace was set by pacemakers Devil's Advocate and Mississippi River, ensuring a strong gallop. Buick positioned Ombudsman patiently before unleashing his electrifying turn of foot to surge clear. The victory drew applause from the Royal Ascot crowd.
Future Plans
John Gosden, securing his 72nd Royal Ascot winner, praised the horse's acceleration and class. He hinted at future targets including the Coral-Eclipse, Juddmonte International, and Champion Stakes. Ombudsman is now 11-10 favourite for the Sandown contest next month.
Buick, landing his 40th Royal Ascot winner, described the horse as an absolute privilege to ride, highlighting his electric turn of foot. He noted that Ombudsman was always in control and delivered an electric performance.
Reactions from Rivals
Aidan O'Brien was delighted with runner-up Minnie Hauk, suggesting she could return to Ascot for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Francis-Henri Graffard, trainer of Daryz, expressed disappointment, noting his horse did not have a smooth run and was out of rhythm.
In other racing, James Owen's Rogue Diplomat won the Royal Hunt Cup by a length from Blue Rc.
