Los Angeles Mayor Demands Resignation of Olympic Chairman Over Maxwell Connections
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has publicly called for Casey Wasserman to step down from his role as chairman of the committee organising the 2028 Olympic Games. This demand comes in the wake of newly released US Justice Department files that disclose email exchanges between Wasserman and convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, dating back over two decades.
Wasserman, who serves as Chairperson and President of LA28, has firmly denied having any personal or business relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the financier and convicted sex offender associated with Maxwell. In a previous statement, Wasserman apologised for his association with Maxwell, emphasising that it occurred before the public became aware of their criminal activities.
Board Review and Decision to Retain Wasserman
Despite Mayor Bass's strong opinion, the LA28 board conducted a thorough review of the situation. After examining the evidence, the board concluded that Wasserman's interactions with Maxwell predated widespread knowledge of Epstein and Maxwell's crimes. Consequently, they decided that Wasserman would remain as chairman, citing the historical context of the communications.
Mayor Bass, while expressing her disagreement with the board's decision, acknowledged that she lacks the formal authority to remove Wasserman from his position. In her statement, she clarified that her primary focus remains on ensuring Los Angeles is fully prepared to host the 2028 Olympic Games, prioritising the city's readiness and success over the ongoing controversy.
Implications for the 2028 Olympic Games
The call for resignation adds a layer of complexity to the preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. With Wasserman continuing in his role, the committee faces increased scrutiny and public attention. However, the board's support suggests confidence in his leadership, despite the historical associations revealed in the Justice Department files.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders and the public will be watching closely to see how this impacts the planning and execution of the Games. Mayor Bass's stance highlights the ongoing tension between accountability for past associations and the practical demands of organising a major international event.
