Eileen Gu Receives Support from Lindsey Vonn After Grandmother's Death

Eileen Gu's record-breaking gold medal win at the 2026 Winter Olympics was overshadowed by the death of her grandmother, Guozhen Feng. The 22-year-old freestyle skier, competing for China, became the most decorated freestyle skier in Olympic history after winning the women's halfpipe on Sunday.

Speaking tearfully to reporters after her victory, Gu described her grandmother as 'a steamship' who 'commanded life' and inspired her. She revealed that her grandmother was very ill before the Games, and she had promised to be brave. 'She's been brave,' Gu added.

Gu paid tribute to her grandmother on Instagram, sharing photos from the hospital and throughout her career. In her caption, she wrote: 'Because I promised her I would be brave like her,' followed by 'I love you grandma' in Chinese. Fellow skier Lindsey Vonn, recovering from a torn ACL, commented: 'Grandmas are so special. I'm so sorry.' Other fans offered condolences and support.

Gu, a Stanford University student majoring in International Relations, has also drawn attention for her eloquence in press conferences. When asked about comments from JD Vance, who said he would only root for American athletes, Gu responded: 'I'm flattered. Thanks, JD! That's sweet.' She noted that many athletes compete for different countries and suggested criticism stems from anti-China sentiment and her success.
