England captain Harry Kane will step onto the pitch against Croatia wearing a slightly different shirt from his teammates. The striker has been granted the privilege of sporting a special Golden Boot patch on his kit throughout the entire World Cup tournament.
A Rare Honour
This unique jersey addition is incredibly rare. Kane is one of only three active players permitted to wear it. The other two footballing stars afforded this distinction are France's Kylian Mbappé and Colombia's James Rodríguez.
How Kane Earned the Patch
The Bayern Munich striker earned this accolade by finishing as the top goalscorer during the 2018 World Cup. His prior achievement grants him this permanent visual distinction on his matchday attire in the current tournament.
For context, James Rodríguez secured his Golden Boot in 2014, while Mbappé became the top scorer more recently in 2022.
Debut Patches for First-Timers
The special badge initiative also includes players making their first World Cup appearance. Any squad member making their debut will wear a specific debut patch to commemorate their milestone.
From Shirt to Trading Card
Once the final whistle blows, these patches are carefully removed from match-worn shirts and placed inside exclusive Topps trading cards as highly sought-after memorabilia.
This innovative programme results from a new collaboration between FIFA and Fanatics, parent company of Topps. FIFA chief Gianni Infantino announced the partnership in May to enhance the collector experience.
End of an Era
The integration of match-worn patches into trading cards ends a long-standing relationship with Panini. Although the broader deal officially begins in 2031, the jersey patch initiative is kicking off early at this World Cup.
Match Details
The Group L opener kicks off in Arlington, Texas, at 3pm local time (9pm UK). During this match, Kane will earn his 115th cap, equalling David Beckham's appearance record.
