Verstappen Racing Driver Hospitalised After Collapsing Post-Race
Jules Gounon, a key teammate of Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, has provided a detailed health update after suffering a dramatic collapse following a demanding GT World Challenge Europe race at Circuit Paul Ricard. The thirty-one-year-old French driver managed to complete two intense stints for Verstappen Racing despite battling a severe case of food poisoning, but his condition deteriorated alarmingly once he exited the cockpit.
Severe Illness and Medical Emergency in the Garage
Gounon revealed that he contracted food poisoning the night before the race, resulting in significant fluid loss and virtually no sleep. He was assisted early in the morning by teammate Dani Juncadella, who took him to the medical centre for initial treatment. Despite feeling unwell, Gounon insisted on participating in the race, describing his double stint as "one of the hardest I've ever done" in a heartfelt Instagram post.
After finishing his driving duties, Gounon completely passed out in the team garage while his co-drivers were still competing on the track. He required several hours of urgent medical attention at the circuit's medical facility, where doctors and paramedics worked to stabilise his condition. The driver expressed profound gratitude to the medical team and the supportive crew from Two Seas Motorsport who remained with him throughout the ordeal.
Resilience and Recovery After a Challenging Race
In his social media update, Gounon reflected on the immense physical and mental challenge he endured, stating he had "never struggled that much in a race car" and pushed himself beyond what he believed were his limits. The Verstappen Racing entry ultimately finished in ninth position, a result Gounon acknowledged was not their target but which highlighted the team's determination and resilience.
The incident served as a stark reminder of the extreme demands placed on professional racing drivers, particularly when competing while ill. Gounon emphasised that the experience reinforced his understanding of true resilience and personal fortitude in high-pressure sporting environments.
Upcoming Endurance Challenge at the Nurburgring
Looking ahead, Gounon is scheduled to team up with Max Verstappen, Dani Juncadella, and Lucas Auer for the legendary Nurburgring Twenty-Four Hours race next month. This will mark Verstappen's highly anticipated debut at one of motorsport's most gruelling endurance events, often referred to as the "Green Hell" due to its formidable reputation.
Gounon and Verstappen have already completed several preparatory outings at the challenging German circuit, building experience and teamwork ahead of the prestigious twenty-four-hour marathon. The recent health scare has not altered these plans, with Gounon expected to make a full recovery in time for the demanding competition.
