Max Verstappen Hints at Early F1 Exit Over New Regulations

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has strongly suggested he may retire from the sport in the near future, expressing clear dissatisfaction with the new regulations set for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old Dutch driver, currently under contract with Red Bull Racing until the end of 2028 in a deal worth £40 million annually, has indicated that these changes are not conducive to extending his career in F1.

Contract and Career Trajectory

Verstappen will be 31 years old when his lucrative Red Bull contract expires, but he has no intentions of following in the footsteps of veteran drivers like Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, who continue to compete into their forties. In a candid interview on the Up To Speed podcast, the reigning champion stated, "I definitely see myself nearing the end." He elaborated that the new regulations are not helping to prolong his F1 career, though he remains content with his current path and is prepared to leave the sport behind.

"I'd say the new regulations aren't helping to extend my F1 career, but it doesn't matter, I'm happy with my trajectory, I can easily leave it behind, I have other projects," Verstappen explained. These projects include competing in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring with his GT3 team and potentially the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the future, showcasing his interest in endurance racing beyond Formula 1.

Prioritising Family and Life Beyond Racing

Verstappen further emphasised his desire to focus on personal fulfilment rather than chasing F1 records. He questioned the importance of championship totals later in life, stating, "Who cares when you're 60 or 70 if you won 4 or 10 titles?" This reflects a shift in perspective as he ages, with a growing preference for spending quality time with loved ones.

"I'm getting older and I prefer to spend time with my family before they're gone. It's something I've realised over time," he added. A recent skiing trip with friends and family highlighted this realisation, as he appreciated the joy of spending several days together and enjoying life outside the racetrack.

Verstappen articulated a broader philosophy on life, saying, "I want to live my life; you only live once, and I don't want to spend 25 years driving a car. I want to appreciate what's out there." He acknowledged that his stance might sound dramatic but affirmed, "I don't want to keep living just to race."

Echoes of Past Sentiments

These comments align with Verstappen's previous statements in 2022 when he signed his contract extension with Red Bull. Speaking to Daily Mail Sport's Jonathan McEvoy at the time, he noted, "The plan is to stay here until 2028. I am not planning on changing teams. I am happy here and they are happy with me. But I have not made up my mind what I will do after 2028. I might stop."

He reflected on his long tenure in Formula 1, having entered the sport at age 17, and expressed a potential desire for change. "I may want to do different stuff. By 31, I don't know whether I will have peaked or where the drop-off in performance may have occurred," Verstappen said. He mentioned interests in endurance racing and a possible easier life with less travel, focusing only on races he enjoys.

However, Verstappen left the door slightly ajar, acknowledging that competitive circumstances could influence his decision. "Whenever an opportunity comes to win a championship, you want to take it. If I am in a fight in 2028 it may be stupid to suddenly stop. It is difficult to know," he concluded, indicating that while an early exit is likely, it is not entirely set in stone.
