Kamaru Usman Issues Direct Challenge to Conor McGregor Following White House Omission
Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has publicly laid down the gauntlet to Conor McGregor, seeking to reignite their longstanding feud after the Irish superstar was notably absent from the much-anticipated White House fight card. McGregor had openly expressed his desire to return at the high-profile event for months, but the slot instead went to his longtime rival Michael Chandler, who faced Mauricio Ruffy.
Social Media Call-Out Sparks Speculation
Usman took to social media platform X to post a cryptic message reading "Usman X McGregor 2026", accompanied by a looking eyes emoji, which appears to be a direct challenge to "The Notorious". This move comes as McGregor remains in what he describes as "limbo" regarding his fighting future, though he has stated his intention to move up to the welterweight division at 170lbs.
History of Tension Between the Fighters
The animosity between Usman and McGregor dates back to a volatile online spat in 2024, during which McGregor launched a fierce verbal attack on Usman in a live stream. "Usman is talking crazy right now," McGregor declared at the time. "What happened in his last fight? I can't even remember where you are at in your game bro. You're nothing to me. F*** Kamaru Usman, he's a bum."
Usman responded by accusing McGregor of disrespect and alleged that the Irishman had ducked out of two previous opportunities to fight him. While tensions had cooled over the past two years, Usman's recent social media activity suggests he is actively trying to stoke the fire once more in hopes of securing a bout with McGregor.
Current Form and Career Trajectories
Kamaru Usman, now in the latter stages of his career, is not on the most formidable run compared to some contenders in the welterweight division. He is coming off a decision win over Joaquin Buckley in June, but that victory followed a three-fight losing streak that began when he lost his title in stunning fashion to Briton Leon Edwards at UFC 278. Despite this, Usman remains one of the division's all-time greats, having staged a dominant reign as welterweight champion between 2019 and 2022, with five successful title defences against opponents like Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington, and Gilbert Burns.
Conor McGregor, a former two-division champion, has not fought since July 2021, when he suffered a broken leg in his second consecutive loss to old rival Dustin Poirier. His planned return in June 2024 was thwarted by a broken toe, forcing him to withdraw from a scheduled fight with Michael Chandler on just two weeks' notice. McGregor is currently serving a backdated 18-month ban from the UFC due to three absences during attempted drug tests, with eligibility to fight again from 20 March.
Legal and Personal Challenges
Outside the octagon, McGregor has faced numerous legal issues in recent years. In November 2024, a civil jury found in favour of a woman who accused him of rape in 2018, holding him liable for assault. His appeal against the verdict failed in July, though he continues to deny all allegations. Additionally, McGregor briefly involved himself in politics last year, ceasing his pursuit of the Irish presidency in September, citing the nation's eligibility criteria as a "straitjacket".
As the MMA world watches closely, Usman's challenge adds another layer of intrigue to McGregor's potential comeback, setting the stage for a possible high-stakes welterweight clash in 2026 if both fighters can align their schedules and resolve their ongoing disputes.
