Topuria Levels Accusations at Makhachev Ahead of Historic White House Title Defence

UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has launched a scathing accusation against Islam Makhachev, claiming the former champion fabricated an injury to avoid a highly anticipated showdown at the White House. This explosive revelation comes as Topuria prepares to defend his title against interim champion Justin Gaethje on June 14 in an unprecedented event on the South Lawn.

"Once Again Islam Comes Up with an Excuse"

In a series of posts on social media platform X, the Spanish-Georgian fighter detailed what he describes as Makhachev's withdrawal from their planned bout. "Once again Islam comes up with an excuse. This time it's an injury," Topuria wrote, expressing frustration at what he perceives as avoidance from the UFC's pound-for-pound number one ranked fighter.

Topuria, who sits at number two in the pound-for-pound rankings, revealed that UFC officials had initially informed him he wouldn't be part of the White House event, only to later confirm his participation with Makhachev as his opponent. "When they finally told me I would be on the White House card, they mentioned Islam and I didn't hesitate for a second to accept the fight," he stated.

Dana White Contradicts Topuria's Claims

UFC President Dana White offered a contradictory account during a press conference, firmly denying that a Topuria-Makhachev fight was ever planned for the historic event. "That's not true. It was never Islam vs Topuria," White told reporters, dismissing the champion's claims outright.

White explained the unusual circumstances that led to Gaethje's inclusion on the card, revealing that matchmakers worked through the night to secure the bout after another fight fell through. "All the boys went back to the office and literally were there 'til 9 in the morning, and that's how Gaethje ended up on the card," the UFC president detailed.

Topuria's Fiery Warning to Gaethje

Turning his attention to his confirmed opponent, Topuria issued a stark warning to the 37-year-old American veteran. "Justin, see you at the White House. I'm not someone who humiliates people. It will be quick. When you wake up, everything will already be over," the champion declared with characteristic confidence.

Topuria didn't stop there, making a crude remark about the fighters' shared manager Ali Abdelaziz, whom he described in vulgar terms. The champion's aggressive rhetoric suggests he's carrying significant frustration from what he believes was Makhachev's avoidance into his preparation for Gaethje.

Championship Records on the Line

The June 14 bout will mark Topuria's first defence of the lightweight title he won spectacularly last June, when he knocked out former champion Charles Oliveira to claim the belt that had been vacated by Makhachev. Topuria carries an impressive undefeated record of 17-0 into the contest, with 7 knockouts and 8 submissions to his name.

Gaethje, meanwhile, brings considerable experience with a record of 27-5, including 19 knockout victories. The American earned his interim title shot with a dominant performance against Paddy Pimblett in January, setting up this championship unification bout at one of the most unique venues in combat sports history.

Makhachev's Injury Status Remains Unclear

While Topuria questions the legitimacy of Makhachev's injury, White confirmed the former lightweight champion is dealing with hand issues. "I don't know how serious the hand issues are or how long that will keep him out, but yeah, he's injured," the UFC president stated, though he offered no timeline for Makhachev's return to competition.

Makhachev, who moved up to welterweight and captured gold in November after vacating the lightweight title, remains at the top of the UFC's pound-for-pound rankings despite his absence from the octagon. The potential showdown between Topuria and Makhachev continues to be one of the most discussed matchups in the sport, though it appears increasingly unlikely to materialize in the immediate future.

As the White House event approaches, all eyes will be on Topuria as he attempts to back up his bold words against the dangerous Gaethje, while questions persist about whether a fight with Makhachev will ever come to fruition.
