The BBC has reached a financial settlement with Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff following his crash while filming Top Gear last December. The former England cricket captain sustained facial injuries during the incident at the show's test track at Dunsfold Aerodrome.
The Sun reported the settlement is worth £9m, with both Flintoff and the BBC expressing satisfaction with the agreement. A BBC Studios spokesperson confirmed the deal, stating: 'BBC Studios has reached an agreement with Freddie that we believe supports his continued rehabilitation, return to work and future plans. We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery.'
BBC Studios, a commercial arm of the corporation, does not use licence fee income. The BBC had previously announced in March that it would be inappropriate to resume Top Gear production after an internal investigation. Decisions on future episodes are expected 'in due course'.
Flintoff, 45, began presenting Top Gear in 2019 and has also appeared on other shows. In September, he was seen publicly with facial injuries for the first time since the crash, and later joined England's cricket coaching staff in an unpaid capacity.
