The production company behind the hit BBC motoring show Top Gear has been formally held accountable for the high-speed crash that severely injured former cricketer and presenter Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) concluded its investigation, placing blame on BBC Studios for the harrowing incident.
The accident occurred in December 2022 at the show's test track at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey. Flintoff was at the wheel of a three-wheeled Morgan Super 3, which did not have airbags, when it overturned at speed. The 46-year-old was seen publicly with facial injuries for the first time nine months later while coaching the England cricket team.
A Catalogue of Safety Failures
The HSE's report identified a series of critical failures that led to the crash:
- Inadequate Risk Assessment: The specific risks associated with driving the open-top vehicle at speed were not properly evaluated.
