Viktor Hovland won the Travelers Championship in a playoff on Monday, defeating world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and claiming a £2.7m prize. Scheffler, who finished second, earned £1.6m, missing out on over £1m. The event had a £15m purse.
Playoff Drama at TPC River Highlands
Scheffler and Hovland were tied at 21-under after 72 holes, forcing a sudden-death playoff delayed by weather. Both players found the fairway on the 18th hole, but Scheffler missed a four-foot putt, while Hovland converted from seven feet to secure victory.
Scheffler, a two-time Masters winner, now leads the PGA Tour money list but is only £1.36m ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick. He will next play at the Scottish Open.
Scheffler Reflects on Loss
“I've been playing golf with Viktor for a long time,” Scheffler said. “He's a guy that has a lot of talent and works really hard. Those are the types of guys you like to see have success.” He added: “It's been two really, really long weeks. Being in contention both weeks. Any time after a major championship, especially a US Open, I think you're going to be pretty worn out. But I felt like I did some really nice things this week, which I'll use that momentum going into the rest of the season.”
Dustin Johnson Skips The Open
Dustin Johnson, a former Masters champion, has withdrawn from Final Qualifying for The Open, ending his streak of 16 consecutive appearances. Johnson, now ranked world No. 210, did not automatically qualify and was scheduled to compete in a 36-hole qualifier but removed his name from the field list. He has made the cut in every major this year but will not play at Royal Birkdale.
The Open, the final major of the season, will see many PGA Tour stars competing, but Johnson's absence marks a notable change.
