Rory McIlroy, one of the top contenders for the 154th Open Championship, was seen on Lord Street in Southport as the town swells with golf fans. The major tournament is being held at Royal Birkdale and runs through Sunday, July 19.
Local Business Owner Meets McIlroy
Lisa Richards, 51, owner of The Hole In 1 golf shop on Lord Street, snapped a selfie with the Northern Irish star. Richards, who lives in Runcorn, said McIlroy was friendly and approachable. “He’s such a nice guy. When I went over, he’d literally just finished food. He was outside the shop, so we spotted him and just kind of accosted him and he was fine,” she told the ECHO.
Richards added that they chatted briefly about McIlroy’s preparations for the week. “I just asked him how he’s feeling about this week and is he ready? Has he had enough practice? Is he out there tomorrow? So, yeah, just a little bit of chit chat and then a little selfie.”
Open Championship Attracts Global Stars
The 154th Open Championship features a stellar field including local golfer Tommy Fleetwood, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, and defending champion Rory McIlroy. Thousands of spectators have descended on Southport and the Royal Birkdale course for the event.
Family-Run Golf Shop Thrives During Tournament
Richards runs The Hole In 1 with her husband Glyn and son Max. The shop has extended its hours from 9am to 8pm through Sunday to meet demand. “It's been mental. We've had customers right up until half past seven when we're closing all week. So far, so good for business. A lot of Americans!” she said.
Richards, a longtime McIlroy supporter, said: “Tommy's the man. Hopefully he brings it home this year. It'd be brilliant if he does in his local town. I'll always back Rory, he's my boy. I've followed him from day one.”
