Piastri Predicts McLaren 'In the Mix' as Croft Backs 2026 Title Bid
Piastri: McLaren 'In the Mix' as Croft Backs 2026 Title Bid

Oscar Piastri has confidently declared that his McLaren team will be firmly 'in the mix' during this weekend's Australian Grand Prix, with the statement coinciding with revered Formula 1 commentator David Croft's bold prediction that the Melbourne-born driver will secure the 2026 world championship title.

Local Hero Mobbed by Fans in Melbourne

Piastri, aged 24, experienced an overwhelming show of support on Tuesday when he was mobbed by scores of enthusiastic fans in Melbourne's Central Business District. The local star, who was raised in the nearby trendy bayside suburb of Brighton, received a hero's welcome as supporters showcased their admiration for the homegrown talent ahead of the highly anticipated race weekend.

Piastri's Assessment of McLaren's Position

After achieving seven race victories last season but ultimately finishing third in the Drivers' Championship standings, Piastri is understandably eager to succeed at the iconic Albert Park circuit. The young driver acknowledged that the recent regulation changes have created uncertainty among many competitors, with the race start widely tipped to be particularly frenetic.

'I think we [McLaren] are in the mix at the moment,' Piastri told assembled reporters during pre-race media sessions. 'We'll find out for sure soon enough, but I don't think we're quite in the position we were 12 months ago where we felt like we were the strongest.'

The Australian driver elaborated further, stating: 'There's going to be a lot of development, a lot of learning, especially for us as drivers...and whoever can get on top of that the quickest in what is a very long season is going to end up on top in the long run.'

Croft's Championship Prediction

Despite Piastri's third-place finish in last year's championship behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Red Bull's dominant Max Verstappen, leading F1 commentator David Croft believes the Australian driver is primed to claim his maiden world title in the coming years.

'Oscar is the guy that I think will be a world champion at the end of this year because of the way that he's improved in the past...and because of the way he ran Lando, who has had a few more seasons, so close last year,' Croft stated emphatically.

Learning from Past Challenges

The commentator specifically referenced Piastri's challenging six-race stretch from Baku onwards last season, noting: 'Last year wasn't great in terms of that run of six races, from Baku onwards. Oscar will have learned how to adapt to a lower-grip track that doesn't necessarily suit his driving style to come away with better results for this year.'

Croft expressed confidence in Piastri's offseason preparations, adding: 'I'm sure he has left no stone unturned in finding ways to improve during the course of this winter. [Piastri] is a world champion in the making. He has all the attributes to be a fine world champion and has displayed in his second and third seasons an ability to learn and improve from his previous seasons.'

McLaren's Melbourne Prospects

Croft also expects McLaren to demonstrate stronger performance in Melbourne than their pre-season testing suggested, potentially validating Piastri's assessment that the team remains competitive despite not being in the dominant position they enjoyed twelve months prior.

The main Australian Grand Prix race is scheduled to commence at 3pm AEDT on Sunday, March 8, with comprehensive live coverage available on Network 10 and Fox Sports for viewers across Australia and beyond.
