The Mexico City Grand Prix result has been revised after Formula One stewards handed Oscar Piastri a 10-second post-race penalty for causing a collision with Arvid Lindblad, dropping the McLaren driver from seventh to 16th place and out of the points.
Max Verstappen won the race, capitalising on early infighting between the two Ferraris to beat Lewis Hamilton to victory. Kimi Antonelli finished third, securing his status as the youngest Formula One champion in history with four rounds still remaining in the season. Those results remain unchanged.
Collision and Penalty
Piastri tangled with Lindblad late in the race, sending the Racing Bulls driver crashing into the barrier and out of the race. Piastri had attempted a move around the outside into turn one, but the pair collided on the approach to the second corner.
Piastri was able to continue but was hampered by significant damage to his McLaren, finishing seventh on the road. The 10-second penalty drops him out of the points and down to 16th in the classification, given the pack was still relatively close together after the late safety car period.
Stewards' Decision
Piastri said after the race he felt it was nothing more than a racing incident. He told reporters: "I went to go up the inside into turn one and he shut the door extremely late, so I kind of ended up on the outside as a result of that. I was pretty close to alongside and he pushed me pretty wide. At that point, I knew I was never going to overtake into turn two."
"But he pushed me so far wide that our wheels were interlocked and I couldn't... we crashed before I even turned for the corner. For me, I think it was just one of those incidents and unfortunate. We were lucky that we could continue with the damage that we had, because it was pretty big. A hard day's work."
However, the stewards disagreed. In the FIA decision document, they wrote: "On the approach to turn one, the driver of Car 81 [Piastri] attempted an overtake on the outside of Car 41 [Lindblad]. Car 81 was never fully alongside Car 41 so was not able to claim the right to the corner."
"Through turn one, the driver of Car 41 defended his position by releasing the brakes. However, he did not force Car 81 off the track, allowing racing room on the outside – which he is not required to do."
"The stewards determined that the collision could have been avoided if the driver of Car 81 had moved further to the left after turn one, even if this involved leaving the track prior to turn two."
