Police are conducting an intensive search for a suspect involved in a fatal shooting that occurred close to the TPC Sawgrass golf course, resulting in a delay to the opening of gates for The Players Championship on Saturday morning. The incident, which took place approximately a mile from the venue, has heightened security concerns and disrupted the event's schedule.
Details of the Shooting Incident
According to St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick, the suspect, identified as Christian Barrios, shot two people multiple times around 10:30 p.m. on Friday in the parking lot of a Walgreens store. The victims, who were known to Barrios, were involved in what authorities described as a domestic violence situation. Both individuals were transported to a hospital but succumbed to their injuries.
Police Pursuit and Course Intrusion
Canine units pursued Barrios onto the property of TPC Sawgrass, where he reportedly picked up a PGA Tour radio before discarding it. Barrios, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Saturday, then stole a black BMW vehicle. Nassau County authorities in northeastern Florida engaged in a chase, forcing the car to crash into a wooded area. The suspect fled on foot and remains at large as of the latest reports.
Impact on The Players Championship
The PGA Tour cited "operational considerations" as the reason for delaying the opening of gates until 9 a.m., despite the first round beginning at 8:15 a.m. without interruption. Hospitality areas experienced a further delay, not opening until 11 a.m. This decision was made to ensure the safety of attendees and players amid the ongoing police investigation.
Background on the Suspect
Sheriff Hardwick revealed that Christian Barrios has a long criminal history, adding context to the severity of the incident. The search efforts continue as law enforcement agencies coordinate to locate and apprehend the suspect, with no further details on his current whereabouts released at this time.
