Lando Norris Crowned F1 World Champion After Thrilling Abu Dhabi Podium Finish
Lando Norris Wins F1 World Title in Abu Dhabi Finale

McLaren's Lando Norris has been crowned the 2025 Formula 1 World Champion after securing a vital third-place finish in a nail-biting season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

A Championship Secured Under Pressure

Entering the race at the Yas Marina Circuit on Sunday 07 December 2025, Norris knew that a podium finish would be enough to seal the title. The 26-year-old Briton delivered under immense pressure, becoming the 11th driver from Britain to win the Formula 1 World Championship. Despite starting from the front row, Norris faced an immediate challenge from pole-sitter Max Verstappen, who aggressively defended his position at the start.

The race's pivotal moment came on lap 23 during a breathtaking duel with Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda. Deployed to hold up Norris, Tsunoda engaged in a fierce defensive battle. Norris made a daring move at approximately 190mph on the drag to Turn 5, squeezing his McLaren past the Red Bull in a move that sent sparks flying and brought him within inches of the barrier.

Stewards' Investigation and Crucial Verdict

The overtake immediately came under scrutiny from the race stewards, as all four of Norris's wheels were judged to be over the white track limits. For several tense laps, his championship hung in the balance while officials investigated whether he had gained an advantage by leaving the track.

In a decisive turn of events, the stewards cleared Norris of any wrongdoing. Instead, they penalised Tsunoda with a five-second penalty for forcing another driver off the circuit. The verdict prompted sighs of relief throughout the McLaren garage, leaving Norris free to focus on securing the points he needed.

Verstappen Wins the Battle, Norris Wins the War

At the front, Max Verstappen dominated the race, winning from pole position and crossing the line 12.5 seconds clear of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. However, the Dutch driver, who ended the season with the most race wins, resisted any temptation to strategically back up the pack to threaten Norris's position.

Norris ultimately finished 3.9 seconds behind his teammate Piastri and a comfortable 6.7 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in fourth. Leclerc, who was the only other driver mathematically able to deny Norris the title in the final laps, could not close the gap despite a late tyre change.

An agonised Verstappen radioed his team to ask if Leclerc was catching Norris, only to be told the pace was "fairly equal". With that, Norris's championship was mathematically assured, capping a remarkable season for the McLaren driver.

The victory marks a historic achievement for Norris and the McLaren team, culminating a year of intense competition and dramatic on-track action. His drive in Abu Dhabi, combining calculated aggression with resilient defence, perfectly encapsulated the skill and determination required of a world champion.
