Koeman Steps Down After Morocco Defeat
Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Dutch national team following their elimination from the World Cup by Morocco. The Netherlands lost 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Guadalajara, with misses from Crysencio Summerville, Quentin Timber, and Justin Kluivert in the shootout.
Koeman, who took charge in 2023, announced his decision in an open letter on Instagram less than 24 hours after the match. He wrote: 'Last night I took the decision to end my stint as head coach of the Dutch National Team.'
Career and Responsibility
The 61-year-old, a former Dutch international with 78 caps, previously managed the Netherlands from 2018 to 2020 before leaving for Barcelona. He returned to the role in 2023. In his letter, Koeman acknowledged the weight of the failure: 'No one is more disappointed about that than me. As a head coach, you carry that responsibility.'
He thanked the players and expressed pride in his career, which included stints at clubs such as Ajax, PSV, Everton, and Barcelona. 'Clubs and people that shaped me and gave me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime,' he wrote.
Wife's Cancer Battle
Koeman also revealed that his wife, Bartina Koeman, is battling breast cancer, a diagnosis she made public in June 2024. He stated his intention to take time away from football to support her. 'Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes,' he said.
He added: 'My wife Bartina has supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as a national coach, despite her own illness process. That is a testimony to incredible strength.'
