Anthony Joshua has submitted his demands to move his fight with Tyson Fury to New York. Joshua has insisted he wants the all-British heavyweight showdown to take place at Wembley. But Netflix and the Saudi Arabian moneymen behind the fight want to stage it in the Big Apple.
Joshua's conditions for New York bout
It is understood Joshua is willing to face Fury at Madison Square Garden on November 20 if he is compensated financially. The former two-time world champion will face a hike in his tax bill if the bout is moved across the Atlantic and wants his purse increased to reflect that. Joshua is also understood to be owed money from his come-from-behind knockout win over Kristrian Prenga last month. Additionally, promoter Eddie Hearn has sought assurances over ticketing and security for the event, as reported by Boxing Scene.
Legacy concerns and potential announcement
Joshua and Fury signed separate contracts for the fight earlier this year but only Joshua's deal included a demand over the venue. He believes hosting the biggest fight in British boxing history in America will damage his legacy. But he is now ready to relent in order to bring an end to his decade-long feud with rival Fury. If Joshua's demands are met, an official announcement could follow next week.
Fury's camp expresses concern over delays
Joshua's demands come after Fury's manager Spencer Brown expressed his concern over the delay in announcing the fight. "Everybody's got a bit of doubt in their mind," he said in an interview with Sky Sports. "There's reasons you could think that. If you'd asked me a week ago, I'd have said no, but now it's a little bit concerning that things haven't progressed down the line. We need to get this fight on."
"You can't keep flogging a dead horse, can you? We've been flogging a dead horse for months now. We've waited and waited to do it at Wembley. The hope is fading that it's going to be at Wembley."
"A decision must be made. Let's get the fight on wherever it is, whether it's in Timbuktu or whether it's in Wembley Stadium. We just want to get it announced. People are getting bored. We're in danger of really boring people."
