Renowned trainer Nicky Henderson has revealed the prominent Flat jockey who stands as a strong contender to partner Constitution Hill when the former Champion Hurdle winner makes his eagerly anticipated debut on the level next month.
A Strategic Shift to the Flat
The celebrated hurdler, owned by Michael Buckley, is scheduled to contest a mile and a half novice race at Southwell on February 20th. This follows a specially created £40,000 event for horses aged four and above, designed to accommodate his transition.
This move comes after a concerning sequence of three falls in his last four outings over jumps. Henderson and Buckley are now exploring whether the horse possesses a viable future on the Flat, with this race serving as a critical assessment before any potential return to hurdling, including a possible tilt at the Cheltenham Festival's Champion Hurdle.
Murphy Emerges as Leading Contender
In discussions with Unibet, Henderson addressed the widespread speculation surrounding the ride. "There has been much speculation as to who will ride him at Southwell," he stated, confirming that while no final decision has been made, owner Michael Buckley has been in direct talks with former champion jockey Oisin Murphy.
"Obviously we'll have to see where he is at the time, but if he's available it's quite possible he could ride," Henderson revealed, highlighting Murphy's status as a prime candidate for the mount.
Preparations and Alternative Options
The trainer provided a positive update on Constitution Hill's preparations, noting successful stalls practice and planned schooling sessions with expert Yogi Breisner. "He is in great form and if it continues that way he will definitely run on February 20," Henderson affirmed, emphasising that the performance will dictate the horse's future direction.
Should Murphy be unavailable, Henderson confirmed a capable alternative is in place. "We have Rob Hornby who rides out for us on occasions... He's a very good jockey, although I don't think we'll be short of applicants!" This underscores the high-profile nature of the ride and the significant interest it has generated within the racing community.
The Southwell debut represents a pivotal moment, with Henderson clear on its purpose: "I think the objective... is so I can hopefully see what potential he has for racing on the Flat and if we can go further down that route." The outcome will determine whether this champion jumper embarks on a new career chapter or prompts a reconsideration of his racing future.
