Lewis Hamilton Praises Kimi Antonelli as Teenager Breaks F1 Pole Record
Hamilton Hails Antonelli After Historic F1 Pole in China

Lewis Hamilton's Heartfelt Tribute to Kimi Antonelli's Historic F1 Pole

Lewis Hamilton delivered a warm and congratulatory message to Kimi Antonelli after the teenage Mercedes driver shattered the record for the youngest-ever pole-sitter in Formula 1 history at the Chinese Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Italian secured the top spot in qualifying in Shanghai, outpacing his teammate George Russell by two-tenths of a second, largely due to Russell's mechanical setbacks during the session.

Hamilton's Praise for the Young Prodigy

Hamilton, who set an impressive lap to finish third in qualifying ahead of his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, spoke glowingly about Antonelli at the post-qualifying press conference. Antonelli replaced Hamilton at Mercedes last year, making his achievement even more poignant. "I have to say a big congratulations to this big lad here, to Kimi," Hamilton stated. "It's an amazing achievement. He took my seat and he hit it hard from the get-go! It's really great to see him progressing - he really deserves it."

Antonelli's pole position broke the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 21 when he set the benchmark at Monza in 2008. This milestone marks a significant moment in the young driver's burgeoning career, highlighting his rapid ascent in the sport.

Qualifying Challenges and Race Expectations

Reflecting on the qualifying session, Hamilton noted the difficulties posed by the conditions. "It was a really tough qualifying, a bit harder with the wind, so gusty today," he explained. "These guys [Mercedes duo] put in some great laps but I'm really happy to be up here. They've been rapid so far this season. We did some great work over the break [after sprint race] and we managed to get a little bit closer to these guys, that's a real positive."

Hamilton, upbeat after securing a top-three finish in the sprint race earlier in the day, is now eyeing his first podium finish for Ferrari in a grand prix on Sunday. The Shanghai International Circuit is a track where he has previously tasted victory six times, adding to the anticipation for the race.

Russell's Perspective and Championship Lead

George Russell, who qualified second despite an electrical issue that nearly sidelined him in the final phase, described his performance as "damage limitation." "In Q2, the front wing broke, I went out in Q3 and the car wasn't restarting so I'm really happy to be standing here," Russell said. "At the start of the last lap, I had no tyre temperature, no battery, so it could have been much worse."

Looking ahead to the race, Russell acknowledged the threat from Ferrari, particularly Hamilton. "We need to take care of the guys in red as well. Lewis is going to be pretty dicey at the beginning of the race – hope to put on a good race to the fans." Russell currently leads the championship by 11 points after his sprint race victory earlier on Saturday.
