The FIA has officially confirmed a series of rule changes for the 2027 and 2028 Formula One seasons following an agreement reached between key stakeholders.
Agreement Reached on Technical and Financial Regulations
In a statement released on Wednesday, the FIA announced that the governing body, Formula One Management, teams, and power unit manufacturers have agreed on a package of changes to the Technical, Sporting, and Financial Regulations for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The statement explained that the agreement came after discussions held since the opening races of the 2026 season, prompted by concerns regarding energy management under the new Power Unit framework.
Addressing Energy Management and Qualifying
The proposed changes are designed to tackle issues related to energy management and fuel energy flow characteristics. A key objective is to make qualifying sessions more flat-out, allowing drivers to push to the limit without compromising the positive and exciting racing that the new regulations have delivered. The package introduces a staged rebalancing of the Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System contribution across the 2027 and 2028 seasons. This includes targeted adjustments to internal combustion engine output, fuel energy flow, and energy recovery system deployment, along with increased flexibility in energy management.
These modifications aim to ensure that the sport continues to deliver thrilling competition while addressing the technical challenges identified early in the 2026 season. The FIA and its partners remain committed to maintaining the high level of excitement that fans have come to expect from Formula One racing.
