New data from Direct Line reveals that drivers aged 18 to 27 are most likely to have out-of-date personal details on their driving licence photocard, risking fines of up to £1,000. A poll of 2,000 UK adults found that 8% of motorists in this age group have an incorrect address, while a further 8% admitted their entire licence was out of date.
The survey, conducted by Opinium in December 2025, also showed that 4% of road users had an incorrect title on their photocard. Driving licence details must be kept current to help identify drivers, prevent identity fraud, and verify legal driving entitlement. Outdated information can also affect insurance validity.
Matt Pernet, head of motor at Direct Line, said: 'Motorists are legally required to inform the DVLA of any change of name, address or of any medical condition that could affect their ability to drive safely. However, our research shows that millions of drivers could have out-of-date information, meaning they would be breaking the terms of their licence.'
In contrast, drivers aged 60 and over were most likely to have up-to-date details. Direct Line urged all motorists to check their licence and update any personal information promptly to avoid penalties.
