Manchester United legend Nicky Butt has described Cristiano Ronaldo as a 'problem' for Portugal manager Roberto Martinez following a disappointing World Cup start. Portugal drew their opening match against DR Congo, with Ronaldo, 41, delivering a lackluster performance in his sixth World Cup appearance.
Ronaldo's Performance Raises Concerns
Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes but failed to impress, prompting pundits to suggest his inclusion hindered the team. Portugal took the lead but could not hold on, as Yoane Wissa equalized for DR Congo. This leaves Martinez with a major selection headache ahead of Tuesday's match against Uzbekistan.
Butt's Assessment
Butt, who played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United, acknowledged the forward's legendary status but highlighted the dilemma he creates. 'Cristiano's a superstar, but he's causing a problem, definitely 100 per cent,' Butt told Paddy Power. 'The minute Martinez brings Ronaldo to the tournament, he has to play him. It's a horrible place for Roberto Martinez to be in.'
Butt believes Ronaldo's ego will be stung by the fact that other top forwards like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, and Erling Haaland have already scored at the tournament. 'He'll take that as a personal insult,' Butt added.
Selection Dilemma
Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has urged Ronaldo to accept a reduced role, but Butt thinks Ronaldo will disagree, forcing Martinez to make a tough call. 'If they get to 60 minutes next game and he's not performing, Martinez will have to bring him off,' Butt said. 'I wouldn't like to be in his position because he can't win.'
Portugal's midfield in the opener featured Joao Neves and Vitinha, with Bruno Fernandes, Pedro Neto, and Bernardo Silva in advanced roles. Goncalo Ramos and Joao Felix are potential replacements for Ronaldo.
Group K Standings
Portugal sits third in Group K after Colombia beat Uzbekistan 3-1. Their next match against Uzbekistan is crucial for progression.
