British teen Arvid Lindblad gets 2026 F1 drive

Britain will have a fifth driver on the Formula 1 grid in 2026 following the sensational promotion of teenage sensation Arvid Lindblad to a race seat with Red Bull's sister team, Racing Bulls.

From Karting Prodigy to Formula 1

The 18-year-old from Virginia Water in Surrey has been fast-tracked into the pinnacle of motorsport after a record-breaking ascent. Lindblad's path began in karting at the tender age of five at Daytona Sandown Park in Esher. His prodigious talent was evident early, crowned British Cadet Champion in 2019 and securing wins in prestigious series like the WSK Super Master Series in 2020.

His potential caught the eye of Formula E champion Oliver Rowland, who became his mentor, and the Red Bull Junior Team, which signed him at just 13. After concluding his karting career with a podium at the 2022 CIK-FIA World Cup, he swiftly moved through single-seaters.

A Meteoric Rise Through the Ranks

Lindblad's career has been defined by shattering age records. In 2023, he impressed with podium finishes in various Formula 4 championships and won the famed Macau Grand Prix. The following year, he became the youngest winner in Formula 3 history at 16 years old in Bahrain, finishing fourth overall.

His 2025 Formula 2 campaign with Campos Racing cemented his superstar status. He became the category's youngest ever race winner at 17 years and 243 days on the Jeddah street circuit in April, adding a Feature Race victory in Barcelona in June. His performances earned him a special FIA Super Licence, mirroring the path of other prodigies like Kimi Antonelli.

Securing the Racing Bulls Seat

The opportunity arose when Isack Hadjar was promoted to the senior Red Bull team to partner Max Verstappen for 2026, creating a vacancy at Racing Bulls alongside Liam Lawson. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko chose Lindblad over the experienced Yuki Tsunoda, who will transition to a test and reserve role within the team.

Lindblad has already tasted F1 machinery, completing a test at Imola in February and making a striking practice debut at the 2025 Mexican Grand Prix. Replacing Verstappen in first practice, he stunned observers by setting the sixth-fastest time, demonstrating immediate comfort in a car over 13 seconds per lap quicker than his F2 machine.

He will join an all-star British line-up on the 2026 grid, which already includes Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, George Russell, and Ollie Bearman, marking a new golden era for UK motorsport talent.
