Brazilian GP grid: Hamilton, Verstappen hit by penalties

Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix from 20th place after accumulating 75 places' worth of grid penalties, while Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez also drop to the back of the grid following engine component changes.

Qualifying at Interlagos was halted after just over two minutes as torrential rain hit the circuit, and more than an hour passed before race control allowed cars back on track. Most of the session was completed in a brief dry window, but the final four minutes saw no cars on track as rain intensified again.

Norris on pole as Russell drops

Lando Norris claimed pole position, though George Russell believed he could have been fastest had Mercedes not told him to abort his final run. Russell serves a five-place grid penalty and drops to seventh.

Kimi Antonelli inherits second place from his Mercedes team-mate, while Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg put Racing Bulls and Audi on the second row in third and fourth respectively.

Hamilton's 75-place penalty

Charles Leclerc was fourth on the road but a 10-place grid penalty drops him to 14th. Hamilton had planned to serve a 10-place penalty but an engine issue forced him to take many more new parts, resulting in 75 places' worth of penalties.

Hamilton out-qualified both Verstappen and Perez, who also received back-of-grid penalties for new engine parts, meaning the Ferrari driver starts 20th ahead of them.

Camara's eventful debut

F1 debutant Rafael Camara spun in Q1, hitting the wall without much damage to his Haas, and produced a lap to escape the bottom six. He crashed more permanently in Q2 but still qualified 13th on the road, inheriting 11th on the grid after penalties are applied.
