Antonelli tipped to skip Brazil GP as Russell jokes sabotage

Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of becoming the youngest-ever Formula 1 world champion after winning the United States Grand Prix on Sunday. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver is just two points away from the title and could clinch it at the Mexico Grand Prix next weekend.

Title within reach

Antonelli can secure the championship if he finishes above ninth in Mexico. He would also be crowned champion if either George Russell or Lewis Hamilton fails to win the race, regardless of his own finishing position.

Reflecting on his drive in Texas, Antonelli said: "It was the result we needed. All this time putting work on the new package and finally seeing the result was very pleasant, perfect strategy to call the one-stop."

He added: "I know we are very close. We try to finish on a high and hopefully we can clinch it very soon."

Brazil GP absence teased

Antonelli did not dismiss the possibility of missing the Brazil Grand Prix due to celebrations after winning the title. Following the US GP, he was joined in the cooldown room by Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, who finished second and third respectively.

During the exchange captured by Sky Sports cameras, Leclerc said: "So, probably Mexico then?" Verstappen shouted: "Tequila!" The Ferrari driver added: "For Brazil, you won't arrive in the best shape."

Verstappen then joked: "Kimi misses the Sao Paulo Grand Prix!" as the three laughed together. While Antonelli did not confirm he would stand down from future races, the 20-year-old could enjoy his celebrations without worrying about further driving commitments.

Russell's sabotage joke

Russell jokingly claimed he would sabotage his Mercedes team-mate by getting him jailed in the US. Speaking before Antonelli took victory on Sunday night, the Brit joked that he could beat the 20-year-old to the F1 crown by reporting him for underage drinking on the podium.

Antonelli has not yet reached the legal drinking age of 21 in the United States. Referencing the potential law break, Russell said: "Actually this could be a good way I can try and beat you in the championship. I can get you arrested on Sunday night and then..." before the pair laughed it off.

Russell is 123 points behind his Mercedes partner in the championship standings. The only way he can take the crown is if he wins all remaining races and Antonelli scores no points.

The Mexico Grand Prix is scheduled for 8pm on Sunday, November 1, on Sky Sports.
