Canada's 6-0 victory over Qatar in the 2026 World Cup was marred by a horrific injury to midfielder Ismael Kone, leading to emotional confrontations between players and coaching staff from both sides.
Injury and Aftermath
Fifty minutes into the Group B match, Qatar's Assim Madibo lunged in from behind on Kone, leaving the Canadian star writhing in agony with a broken leg. The game was halted as medical staff rushed to treat him. Madibo buried his head in his hands as Canadian players surrounded him, tensions boiling over.
Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick, was seen in tears, as was manager Jesse Marsch. A Canadian backroom staff member was heard telling a referee: "His leg's hanging off. It's a f***ing broken leg over there."
Red Card and Confrontation
Madibo received a straight red card, leaving Qatar with nine men. Marsch reportedly approached the Qatari dugout to confront their coaching staff. After Kone was stabilized and stretchered off, the crowd gave him a standing ovation, to which he responded with a thumbs-up.
Emotional Tribute
Fourteen minutes later, Nathan Saliba scored from a free kick and formed an "8" with his hands, Kone's number. He then held Kone's jersey aloft to the crowd, drawing a thunderous reception. Canada extended their lead to 5-0 through an own goal by Mohammed Manai in the 75th minute.
Post-Match Comments
After the final whistle, players clashed again, and Marsch exchanged heated words with Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui. Marsch later said: "Ismael is such a great kid... He can do things that no other player can do. He is a huge loss for us."
