Wes Nelson's New Year's Eve Surgery After Achilles Injury on Football Pitch
Wes Nelson to have Achilles surgery on New Year's Eve

Reality TV star and singer Wes Nelson faces an unusual New Year's Eve as he prepares for surgery to repair a serious injury. The 27-year-old, who rose to fame on Love Island in 2018, has confirmed he will be in hospital on December 31st to have a torn Achilles tendon reattached.

A Painful Football Mishap

Nelson revealed the origin of the injury last week, explaining he had snapped his Achilles tendon while playing football. It was, by his own admission, his first time playing the sport in years. He shared a video from a medical appointment where he could be seen holding his head in his hands, captioning it: 'Decided to play football for the first time in years and snapped my Achilles.'

On Tuesday, he provided a fresh update from a hospital bed, his leg already bandaged. 'Update. Looks like I'm getting an operation on New Year's Eve to reattach my achilles,' he wrote. In a lighter follow-up post, he mused on childhood desires, asking his followers: 'On another note, when I was younger I wanted a cast so bad?! I can't be the only one?!'

Recovery and a Change of Sport

The Achilles tendon is the thick, vital cord connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone, essential for walking, running, and jumping. Injuries often require significant recovery time. Joking about his sporting future, Nelson later shared a photo of his bandaged foot and declared his football days over. 'Nah, the game has absolutely gone,' he wrote. '27-years-old and I'm calling it a day. Golf and golf alone.'

A Year of Setbacks for the Star

This injury marks another unfortunate event in what has been a challenging year for Nelson. In October, he reported being robbed for the second time in 2023. He took to Instagram to explain that his full set of golf clubs and bag had been stolen, lamenting: 'I actually hate what London has become. Twice in a year. Cheers.'

The first theft occurred in January, when his designer Louis Vuitton bag, valued at £8,570, was stolen from a train as it stopped at Milton Keynes. Nelson detailed how a thief had slowly slid the bag from the overhead rack to the seat behind him before making off with it at the station. He noted he was fortunate to have removed his laptop, which contained his unreleased music, prior to the journey.

As he heads into surgery, Nelson's focus will now shift to recovery, hoping for better fortunes in the new year following a string of painful and costly incidents.
