Teen Footballer Dies After Chest Strike in Argentina Match

A 14-year-old boy has tragically died after being struck in the chest by a football during a match in Argentina. Benjamín Valentín Donofrio was playing a recreational game on Tuesday, June 16, when he received a powerful shot to the chest and abdomen. Witnesses reported that the youth player, who was part of Club Atlético Sarmiento de La Banda, fell to the ground in severe pain.

He managed to stand up after a few seconds but collapsed again after taking a few steps. Moments later, he began convulsing, prompting an urgent call for emergency medical assistance at the pitch in La Banda. Paramedics arrived and rushed him to the nearest health centre, but he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest during the journey.

Upon arrival at the hospital, medical staff performed CPR, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to revive the teenager. Blows to the chest can, in rare cases, trigger severe disturbances in the heart's rhythm if they occur at a specific moment in the heart's electrical cycle. This phenomenon, known as commotio cordis, has been documented across various sports.
