Benjamin Sesko's recovery from a shin injury is progressing as planned, with the striker on target to be available for Manchester United's Premier League opener against Hull City on August 22. The Slovenian missed the Red Devils' first two pre-season friendlies against Wrexham and Rosenborg as he continues a rehabilitation program.
Injury background
Sesko aggravated a shin problem in the win over Liverpool in early May, causing him to miss the final three games of the season. United kept details of the injury private at the time. According to reports, his recovery is going to schedule and he was never expected to feature in the opening friendlies.
He began outdoor training last week and has a chance of being involved against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on Saturday. He is also likely to start against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on August 8 before the squad flies to Dublin for a six-day training camp. United then face Leeds at Croke Park on August 12.
Key player under Carrick
Sesko became a super-sub under manager Michael Carrick, scoring winners against Fulham and Everton as well as a stoppage-time equaliser at West Ham. He also netted crucial goals against Crystal Palace, Brentford and Liverpool, ending his debut campaign with 12 goals.
Opportunity for Zirkzee
In Sesko's absence, Joshua Zirkzee has started the recent friendlies. The Dutchman, signed by former manager Erik ten Hag, has struggled to meet expectations and is being linked with a return to Italy. United are looking to sell him at the right price.
