Jordan Henderson sustained a severe arm injury while celebrating England's historic 3-2 victory over Mexico, and fresh footage has captured the precise moment it occurred.
Henderson Stretchered Off After Freak Fall
Henderson, 36, was carried off on a stretcher after landing badly and damaging his wrist while trying to scale the advertising boards during the full-time celebrations. The former Liverpool skipper needed oxygen as he was treated by medical staff and was rushed straight to hospital.
Speaking in a post-match interview with the BBC, England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged it appeared "really bad" and suggested he may require surgery. Tuchel said: "Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist, it looks really bad." Later in his press conference, Tuchel stated: "He injured his wrist, he's gone to hospital it's quite a serious injury. It doesn't fit with the night. I don't know if there will be a procedure."
New Footage Reveals Exact Moment
Now, fresh footage has shown the precise moment Henderson picked up the problem. Following the England squad's leap over the advertising hoardings to get nearer to supporters and perform a version of Oasis' Wonderwall, the players then headed back towards the pitch. But Henderson didn't return unscathed. Indeed, after watching Dan Burn clamber over the advertising hoardings, Henderson appeared to catch himself on the way back before losing his footing and tumbling to the ground.
It was the landing itself, however, that caused the injury. As the Brentford midfielder attempted to break his fall, he placed his left arm on the turf, only for his wrist to appear to snap on impact. Henderson's teammates quickly gathered around him to form a huddle as medical staff rushed to provide treatment, before he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher while receiving oxygen.
Match Details and Upcoming Quarter-Final
The incident unfolded as he and his teammates were celebrating a hard-fought 3-2 victory. Having raced into a 2-0 advantage courtesy of Jude Bellingham's brace, Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico just before half-time. Mexico's confidence grew further when right-back Jarell Quansah was dismissed for a reckless challenge early in the second half, yet Tuchel's men responded immediately through captain Harry Kane's penalty after Anthony Gordon was fouled. Raul Jimenez converted a spot-kick of his own to halve the deficit for a second time and crank up the tension, but Tuchel's side held firm to see the match out.
England now face Norway in the World Cup quarter-final in Miami on Saturday evening. Stale Solbakken's side booked their place in the last eight after Erling Haaland's brace secured a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil.
