Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has provided an update on Mason Mount after the midfielder was forced off at half-time during the Red Devils' Premier League victory over Newcastle United.
Mount Forced Off at the Break
The England international started the match at Old Trafford on Friday 26 December 2025, operating in an advanced role behind striker Benjamin Sesko alongside Matheus Cunha. However, he did not emerge for the second half, with 18-year-old academy graduate Jack Fletcher taking his place.
United went on to secure a narrow 1-0 win, their first home victory at the Theatre of Dreams in two months, which lifted them to fifth in the Premier League table.
Amorim Explains Cautious Approach
Speaking after the match, Amorim revealed the reasoning behind the change, indicating a precautionary measure due to a potential injury. "He felt something at half-time and he wanted to go in the second half but we cannot lose more players," the Portuguese coach stated.
Amorim described Mount's desire to continue as a "good sign" but emphasised that the club's lengthy injury list meant taking any risks was out of the question. Bruno Fernandes, the club captain, was already absent through injury, while Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Implications for Wolves Fixture
The decision not to risk Mount further has immediate consequences for United's next fixture. The team is scheduled to host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Tuesday 30 December.
With Fernandes, Mbeumo, and Diallo already confirmed absentees, Mount's fitness will be a major concern for Amorim as he prepares his squad. The manager's comments suggest a scan or further assessment will be needed to determine the severity of the issue the player felt at the interval.
The introduction of Jack Fletcher, son of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, provided a positive note, but the focus will now be on the treatment room as United look to maintain their improved league position.
