Arsenal's Martinelli Injury Doubt for Brighton After Palace Cup Win
Martinelli Injury Blow for Arsenal After Palace Victory

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has delivered a fresh injury update concerning forward Gabriel Martinelli, casting a shadow over the team's festive fixture schedule. The Brazilian winger picked up a knock during Tuesday night's Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.

Knock Forces Early Substitution

The injury occurred late in the first half of the cup tie following a collision with Palace defender Jaydee Canvot. Martinelli, who had been a standout performer for the Gunners in the opening period, went to ground and required treatment from the physios for what appeared to be a knee issue.

Although he managed to limp off the pitch unaided and even returned after the interval, the discomfort persisted. Arteta was forced to substitute the attacker in the 59th minute, bringing on Leandro Trossard in his place.

Arteta's Post-Match Assessment

Speaking after the dramatic penalty shoot-out win, Arteta provided some context while confirming the player's immediate status. "Gabriel Martinelli is more of a knock and he wasn't comfortable to carry on after the second half," the Arsenal boss explained. "He could not carry on, so we had to make the sub."

While the initial diagnosis suggests the issue is not a major long-term injury, it has immediately placed Martinelli as a doubt for the crucial home Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion this Saturday.

Defensive Concerns and Dramatic Cup Progress

Arteta also touched on another fitness concern within his squad, noting a separate issue for defender Piero Hincapie. "With Piero Hincapie, something different because he picked up an injury against Everton," he added, highlighting the growing list of absentees.

The match itself was a tense affair. Arsenal had taken the lead through a Maxence Lacroix own goal in the 80th minute, only to be pegged back by a stoppage-time equaliser from Marc Guehi. The tie went to penalties, where goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga emerged as the hero. After 15 successful spot-kicks, he saved Lacroix's attempt to send Arsenal into a semi-final clash with his former club, Chelsea.

This victory, however, comes at a potential cost. With the busy festive period in full swing, the possible loss of Martinelli for the weekend presents a significant challenge for Arteta as he looks to maintain momentum in the Premier League.
