England's women's football team has been dealt a significant blow as captain Leah Williamson has been ruled out of the upcoming Euro 2025 qualifiers due to a hamstring injury. The Arsenal defender, who only recently returned from an ACL injury that kept her out of last year's World Cup, sustained the new setback during club training.
Another Frustrating Setback for Lionesses' Leader
The 27-year-old centre-back, who led England to Euro 2022 glory, will miss crucial matches against Sweden and the Republic of Ireland later this month. This comes as particularly disappointing news for manager Sarina Wiegman, who was counting on Williamson's leadership and defensive stability as the Lionesses begin their qualification campaign.
Wiegman Faces Defensive Dilemma
With Williamson unavailable, Wiegman must now reshuffle her backline. Chelsea's Millie Bright, who captained the side in Williamson's previous absence, is expected to step up again alongside defensive partners Alex Greenwood or Jess Carter.
The injury continues what has been a challenging period for Williamson, who missed nine months of action following her ACL rupture in April 2023. Her return to the England squad in February had been seen as a major boost ahead of the Euro 2025 qualification process.
Arsenal Confirm Rehabilitation Plan
Williamson's club, Arsenal, confirmed the injury in a statement: "Leah has sustained a minor hamstring injury in training. She will undergo a period of rehabilitation and is expected to return to action in the coming weeks." While the timeframe suggests the injury isn't severe, it's enough to rule her out of international duty.
The Lionesses begin their Euro 2025 qualification campaign against Sweden at Wembley on 5 April before travelling to face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin four days later. England have been drawn in a tough qualifying group that also includes France, making Williamson's absence particularly significant.
