Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was carted off the practice field on Thursday after hobbling from a scramble, sparking injury fears early in training camp.
The 26-year-old franchise quarterback went to the ground after a play near the end of the afternoon session. Head coach Zac Taylor later confirmed it was a calf injury, with Burrow having worn a sleeve on the leg.
Teammates gathered as trainers attended to the Pro Bowl signal-caller before he was helped onto a cart. “Sometimes players feel a little sore after the first day,” Taylor said, addressing why Burrow had the sleeve on.
“My gut says Joe will be OK,” centre Ted Karras said in the locker room. Defensive end Sam Hubbard added: “Calf strains are painful but aren’t the end of the world. They do linger, but the training staff and Joe will take care of it early and be ready to go.”
Burrow is still negotiating a long-term contract that could make him one of the NFL’s highest-paid players. He had spoken earlier in the week about feeling good at camp after previous disruptions, including a rookie year truncated by Covid, knee surgery rehab in 2021, and appendicitis last year.
