Former champion jockey Jim Crowley has thanked fans for their support after suffering a broken leg and pelvis in a fall at York on Sunday. The 47-year-old was riding Almeraq in the Sky Bet Starman Garrowby Stakes when the horse clipped heels and fell around two furlongs from the finish, bringing down Tiger Bay ridden by Trevor Whelan.
Both jockeys were conscious and taken to Leeds General Infirmary. Whelan sustained a complex ankle fracture, while Crowley underwent surgery to stabilise his fractures after initial treatment for internal bleeding. In a statement on Instagram, Crowley said: 'I would like to say a big thank you for everyone’s kind messages... I have unfortunately broken my leg and pelvis.'
The Injured Jockeys’ Fund also provided an update on David Noonan, who was injured at Fontwell on the same day. Noonan underwent surgery on Monday to stabilise a leg fracture and is expected to be discharged soon. The Fund noted that all three jockeys face a prolonged recovery and rehabilitation.
Both horses involved, Almeraq and Tiger Bay, walked away unhurt from the incident.
