Collingwood Magpies' star defender Jeremy Howe has opened up about the gruelling aftermath of his broken arm injury, admitting he relied on strong painkillers to cope—and crediting his wife and young son for keeping him grounded during his recovery.
The AFL veteran suffered the injury during a match earlier this season, leaving him sidelined and in significant pain. Howe revealed that the prescribed pain medication became a necessary but concerning part of his daily routine.
The Painful Road to Recovery
"The pain was relentless," Howe admitted. "I was on some pretty strong medication just to function. It’s not something I ever wanted to rely on, but at the time, it was the only way to manage."
Despite the physical toll, Howe said the emotional support from his family was crucial. His wife, who works in healthcare, monitored his medication closely, while his young son provided much-needed distraction.
Family First: The Key to Healing
"Having my wife there was a blessing—she understood what I was going through and made sure I didn’t overdo it," Howe shared. "And my son? He just wanted me to play with him, which kept me motivated to get better."
The 33-year-old is now back in training and determined to return to peak form. His experience has also made him an advocate for mental resilience in professional sports.
Looking Ahead: A Stronger Comeback
Howe’s injury has been a setback, but he remains optimistic. "This game tests you in every way," he said. "But I’ve learned a lot about myself—and how much I need my family."
Collingwood fans will be eager to see him back on the field, stronger than ever.
