Jordan Henderson's World Cup appears over after he suffered a freak arm injury celebrating England's 3-2 victory over Mexico. The 10-man England side secured a remarkable win, but the jubilation turned to concern when Henderson tumbled over advertising hoardings, landing with his right arm trapped under his body.
The former Liverpool midfielder was stretchered off, given oxygen, and taken to hospital. He remained in Mexico City as the team returned to Kansas City, with his tournament likely finished.
Tuchel Confirms Serious Injury
England manager Thomas Tuchel delivered a worrying update, telling the BBC: "Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist, it looks really bad." In his post-match press conference, Tuchel added: "He injured his wrist, he's gone to hospital. It's quite a serious injury. It doesn't fit with the night. I don't know if there will be a procedure."
Mirror chief football writer John Cross described the incident as a "hammer blow." Speaking on the Make Football Great Again podcast, he said: "It feels like it might be his World Cup over, to be honest. It's a wrist-stroke arm injury, you probably get plaster, but that early stage is difficult. As the team travels back to Kansas City, Henderson stays behind in Mexico City to have it set and repaired. It feels like his World Cup is over. What an absolute hammer blow. Tuchel clearly thinks he's the right person to motivate the troops. It's so heartbreaking."
Impact on England's Squad
Henderson's leadership and experience were valued by Tuchel, who had praised him pre-match. Goalscorers Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham also shared their thoughts on the midfielder. England now face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday, following their win over Mexico. The only other confirmed quarter-final is France vs Morocco.
Henderson's absence leaves a gap in midfield and leadership, with Tuchel needing to adjust his plans for the knockout stages.
