Conor McGregor's return to the UFC octagon ended in disaster as he suffered a knee injury just 69 seconds into his fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas. The Irishman, stepping back into the cage for the first time in five years after a leg break against Dustin Poirier, landed awkwardly on his right leg and was forced to withdraw.
Fight Ends Abruptly
McGregor, 37, charged toward Holloway and attempted a spinning kick but landed badly, immediately showing signs of distress. He stumbled multiple times, and despite Holloway's reluctance to engage on the ground, the referee eventually stepped in to halt the contest as McGregor shook his head in pain. The crowd jeered, but Holloway defended his opponent, calling for a third fight.
"Let's give it up for Conor, what an absolute animal," Holloway said. "You guys are lucky because there is going to be a Holloway v McGregor three now. Let's get that money. It is what it is. We have to run it back one more time."
Dana White's Update on Injury
At the post-fight press conference, UFC CEO Dana White provided an update on McGregor's condition. "Five years off in this sport is rough," White said. "We're assuming blown ACL. I'm no doctor, but that's what I figured when I saw it, and the doctors think the same thing, too."
If McGregor has indeed torn his ACL, recovery could take over a year, raising questions about whether this was his final octagon appearance. He turns 38 in a matter of days.
Paddy Pimblett's Quick Victory
In the co-main event, Paddy Pimblett submitted Benoit Saint-Denis seconds into their bout after catching a leg kick and applying a choke. Pimblett called out multiple fighters, including Ilia Topuria, Justin Gaethje, and Conor McGregor. "Sub of the year! I knew he was out," Pimblett said. "I'm like a spider. When I've got hold of you, you don't get out."
