Celtic's interim manager Martin O'Neill has delivered a devastating update, confirming that key defender Cameron Carter-Vickers will not play again this season.
Season Over for Key Defender
The American international suffered a serious Achilles injury during Celtic's victory over Sturm Graz on October 23, requiring surgery. Initial hopes suggested a couple of months on the sidelines, but O'Neill presented a much bleaker picture ahead of Celtic's trip to St Mirren.
"The whole year," O'Neill stated bluntly. When questioned about the player's availability for the upcoming World Cup, he revealed: "Funnily enough, I did ask him yesterday, did he think he would be ready for the World Cup? And he said he thought that would be very doubtful."
O'Neill confirmed the defender is unlikely to even return to training on grass until April, effectively ending his club season and placing his international ambitions in severe jeopardy.
Injury Crisis Deepens for Celtic
The bad news extends far beyond Carter-Vickers, with several other first-team players facing lengthy spells on the treatment table.
Alistair Johnston, who picked up a knock in the same fixture against Sturm Graz, will be out for four to five months after undergoing hamstring surgery. Fellow player Callum Osmand had the same operation on the same day but faces an even longer recovery of five months due to a more severe injury.
O'Neill also confirmed that Jota is currently unavailable, while James Forrest remains missing. Kelechi Iheanacho has resumed some training but was not ready for the St Mirren game.
Glimmers of Hope and Managerial Update
There was a slight positive note regarding left-back Marcelo Saracchi, who is nearing a return and could be available for selection for the Europa League trip to Feyenoord or the subsequent match against Hibernian.
On the managerial front, O'Neill admitted his surprise at still being in charge, acknowledging that progress is being made towards a permanent appointment, with Columbus Crew manager Wilfried Nancy strongly linked with the role.
