A 12-year-old boy from Lincolnshire has described how he is 'lucky to be alive' after a metal spring from a trampoline broke off and became embedded in his back. Jamie Quinlan was bouncing on a friend's trampoline on Saturday when the accident occurred.
Jamie said he felt a 'very strange' sensation followed by 'a lot of pain'. His father, Ian, from Louth, said his 'heart dropped' when he saw the spring lodged in his son's back. The spring was removed in an operation under local anaesthetic.
Jamie said the spring was 'so heavy' and added he could not believe 'I've been through all this'. He described the incident as 'rarer than a lightning strike' and noted that he was lucky the hook broke off, as it could have been worse.
Mr Quinlan urged other parents to be vigilant after the freak accident, which occurred when several children jumped on the trampoline at the same time, causing it to go very low and the spring to come away. Jamie was discharged from hospital soon after surgery and said he is 'a lot better' now.
