Arsenal's impressive start to the season has been dealt another significant blow with the news that defender Cristhian Mosquera is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Spanish Defender Suffers Ankle Setback
The Spanish centre-back, who has been a crucial stand-in during an injury crisis, was forced off during the first half of the Gunners' midweek victory over Brentford. According to a report from BBC Sport, the ankle issue he sustained is expected to keep him out of action for between six and eight weeks.
Mosquera had been forming a makeshift partnership with Piero Hincapie in the heart of defence, covering for the absent first-choice pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. The injury occurred after an awkward landing, prompting his immediate substitution for Jurrien Timber.
Arteta Confirms Complicated Situation
Speaking ahead of Arsenal's Premier League clash with Aston Villa, manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the severity of the situation. "This one is more complicated," Arteta stated in his Friday press conference. "But again, we have another test today to see where we are with him."
The manager described the incident as "very bizarre," echoing his frustration over a series of unlucky injuries affecting his squad. Further tests are scheduled to determine the full extent of the damage.
Defensive Reshuffle Required for Villa Trip
Mosquera's absence exacerbates an already critical situation in Arsenal's back line. The club's injury list this season has been substantial, with key players like Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Viktor Gyokeres having already missed periods. Currently, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard are also unavailable.
There is a glimmer of positive news, however. William Saliba is expected to return for the match at Villa Park, with Arteta previously indicating the Frenchman was only a "matter of days" away from fitness after a minor issue. Gabriel Magalhaes is not due back until the New Year.
Should Saliba not be ready, Arteta will likely turn to either Jurrien Timber or Ben White to partner Hincapie at centre-back. This defensive reshuffle comes at a busy time for the league leaders, who face Club Brugge in the Champions League next Wednesday.
Despite the mounting injury concerns, Arsenal remain top of both the Premier League and their Champions League group, a testament to the squad's depth and resilience under Arteta's management.
