Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has offered a glimmer of hope that captain Bruno Fernandes could be back in action before the month is out. The Portuguese playmaker has been sidelined for the club's last three matches, a period which has seen United's squad stretched to its limits.
Injury Crisis Amidst AFCON Absences
Bruno Fernandes was substituted at half-time during the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on December 21 and has missed subsequent games against Newcastle, Wolves, and Leeds United. His absence has been compounded by a significant injury list and players away on international duty.
The situation was starkly evident during Sunday's 1-1 draw at Elland Road. With Bryan Mbeumo, Amad, and Noussair Mazraoui at the Africa Cup of Nations, and Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire, and Matthijs de Ligt all injured, United's bench was threadbare. Only three senior players – Joshua Zirkzee, Altay Bayindir, and Tyrell Malacia – were amongst a host of academy prospects.
Amorim's Positive Update on Key Duo
Following the match, where Matheus Cunha cancelled out Brenden Aaronson's opener for Leeds, Amorim was asked about potential January signings. He shifted focus to returning players, stating: "Just focus on the game, prepare for the game we have. I expect to have some minutes from Bruno and Mason Mount maybe. So we'll see, we'll have more quality that we have. There are players ready to help us."
When pressed on whether the pair could feature in United's next fixture, the manager remained coy but optimistic, replying: "We'll see." This hint suggests a return for the influential Fernandes, and possibly Mount, is on the horizon in the coming weeks.
Looking Forward Amidst Transfer Restraint
Amorim has already dampened expectations of a busy January transfer window at Old Trafford, referencing the club's summer expenditure of over £200 million. He emphasised the need for focus, saying: "United is one of the best clubs in the world. If you are here and focusing on a different club then something is wrong with you."
Despite the frustration of another draw, the manager found positives in his team's performance at Leeds, highlighting improved control compared to the previous match against Wolves. The potential return of Bruno Fernandes, however, will be the most welcome boost as United look to add more cutting edge to their play in the second half of the season.
