Kevin Pietersen has made a shock return to the England setup, 12 years after being brutally axed by the ECB. Pietersen, 46, will serve as a specialist mentor for England's white-ball teams in preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Mentor role under McCullum
The South African-born former batsman will be part of the coaching staff led by Brendon McCullum, who remains in his position despite being sacked as head coach of the Test side earlier this summer. Pietersen's work begins next week when England welcome Sri Lanka for three T20 matches and three ODIs.
"Putting on the England uniform again for the first time since 2014 is a profound honour and a deeply special moment," Pietersen commented. "We have an incredibly talented white-ball squad, and I am excited to get in the trenches and work relentlessly hard with these players to maximise their potential.
"To be a part of Brendon's think tank over the next 12 months is a fantastic opportunity, and I cannot wait to get started."
Tour schedule and World Cup plans
The 275-time England international will also be involved in tours of Australia and South Africa over the winter before clashes with Pakistan and New Zealand at home next summer. Next year's World Cup takes place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, and the ECB believe that Pietersen's knowledge of the region will help Harry Brook's team.
Pietersen's return comes more than a decade after he was controversially released early from his central contract in the aftermath of England's 5-0 Ashes whitewash by Australia. The ECB said at the time that the decision had been made in order to create a culture in which former captain Alastair Cook had the full support of all players.
McCullum's backing
A dazzling player and a divisive character, Pietersen was infamously dropped from the Test team in 2012 after sending texts to opposing South African players in which he reportedly labelled then-captain Andrew Strauss a 'doos' (an Afrikaans insult). Pietersen has since said that he has made up with Strauss and former team-mate Matt Prior, who he had a public war of words with following his 2014 axe.
McCullum said of his appointment: "I've got immense respect for KP and what he's achieved in the game. He's had an amazing impact on English cricket, so for someone with his experience, knowledge and stature to want to play a role with this team is a fantastic result.
"I'm particularly excited for our batters to get the opportunity to work with him. KP has a unique understanding of what it takes to perform at the highest level, which will be hugely valuable to our players.
"We've always respected each other and had a strong appreciation for what the other brings to the game, so I'm really looking forward to working together."
Pietersen becomes the latest specialist to work with England's white-ball teams since Rob Key was made director of England men's cricket in 2022. Mike Hussey was part of England's T20 World Cup win in Australia later that year before Kieron Pollard helped them during the 2024 edition in the Caribbean.
