Newcastle United's players faced an immediate inquest after their 4-1 defeat at Coventry City, with preparations for Saturday's clash with Aston Villa already under way. The squad returned to the training ground the day after the loss for recovery and fresh messaging as they look to bounce back from a second 4-1 defeat of the season.
Jaissle demands sharper edge
Head coach Matthias Jaissle urged his team to be "cleaner in both boxes" in his post-game message to the players, a point reinforced ahead of the meeting with Unai Emery's Villa. The visitors arrive unbeaten in three games in all competitions but sit 16th in the table on five points, with a Champions League fixture against Fenerbahce on Thursday evening.
Speaking after the match, Jaissle said: "The overall picture is a bit different if you are realistic. If you go by the story of the match (statistics), you should not lose that match 4-1. But the reality is also that it happened. We need to improve, especially in the boxes."
Defensive decisions loom
Jaissle faces a significant decision on whether to overhaul his defensive plans, with Fabian Schar and Dan Burn options to solidify the backline. Such a change would mean dropping stand-in captain Malick Thiaw or Sven Botman, and Jaissle noted that his performance staff are dictating how many minutes each player can feature.
Amar Dedic is also nearing full fitness after hamstring problems, and Jaissle could field a new-look back four if medics give the green light. Behind the scenes, sporting director Ross Wilson and performance chief James Bunce remain calm about the situation.
Apology to travelling fans
The season was always likely to include bumps after Eddie Howe's departure and Jaissle's arrival as head coach. Jaissle left Coventry convinced his side had been well prepared and favourites to take three points.
He said: "We're frustrated. The lads, as well. It's a feeling you don't want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should win. We can only apologise to the fans who came here, they deserve a different result. We need to analyse it, clearly."
That analysis began quickly after the heavy defeat, with Newcastle facing Villa in an immediate chance to climb back into the top 10.
