Tuchel's Palmer Omission Criticised After Ghana Draw

Thomas Tuchel's decision to omit Cole Palmer from England's World Cup squad has come under renewed scrutiny following a frustrating 0-0 draw with Ghana on Tuesday night. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher argued that Palmer would have been a more effective option from the bench than Eberechi Eze, who struggled to break down a well-organised Ghanaian defence.

Carragher's Criticism

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Carragher said: "Tuchel sending on Eberechi Eze for the final 20 minutes will have provoked many in the country to think, 'Surely Palmer would have been a better option from the bench?'" Carragher highlighted that Palmer, despite an injury-hit season at Chelsea, possesses the "X-factor" needed to unlock deep-lying defences.

"Here was a scenario we have seen so often at international level: England drawing a blank against a side defending deep, challenging us to find the wizardry to open them up," Carragher added. "For that, you need a magician and from the moment Tuchel selected his squad, the worry was that he left out the No. 10 with all the best tricks."

Eze's Ineffectiveness

Eze, introduced in the 72nd minute, failed to make a significant impact and was dispossessed on one occasion, with Ghana wasting the resulting counter-attack. The 27-year-old Arsenal forward had a solid debut season at the Emirates, scoring 10 goals and helping the Gunners win the Premier League title, but he could not replicate that form against Ghana.

England manager Thomas Tuchel also introduced Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, Nico O'Reilly and Morgan Rogers between the 65th and 83rd minute, but none could find a breakthrough. Carragher noted that Tuchel's substitutions were "like-for-like" replacements, lacking a maverick option like Palmer.

Group L Standings

The draw leaves England top of Group L with four points, following their 4-2 victory over Croatia. A win against Panama on Saturday would virtually assure safe passage into the round of 32. However, Carragher warned that Tuchel's decision to omit Palmer could prove costly in tight knockout matches.

"This was never about selecting Palmer to necessarily start every game. It just feels wrong that a player who scored in a European Championship final, and ripped Paris St-Germain apart in the Club World Cup in the US last summer, was not picked as an option," Carragher concluded.
