Two Panama players clashed during an open training session on Friday, overshadowing preparations for their final World Cup group game against England on Saturday. The confrontation involved Cecilio Waterman and Jose Luis Rodriguez, with Waterman pushing Rodriguez in the chest before being held back by teammates.
Training Ground Incident
Video footage showed Waterman shoving Rodriguez, and the argument briefly escalated before teammates intervened. The session quickly resumed, and the incident appeared to pass without further disruption. Panama is already eliminated from the tournament after losing their first two matches, suffering narrow 1-0 defeats to Ghana and Croatia.
Match Context
Panama faces England for the second time in World Cup history, having lost 6-0 in 2018, when Harry Kane scored a hat-trick. The team, now ranked 42nd in the world, has shown improvement since then. England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, needs a result to secure top spot in Group L. A win would send them to Atlanta to face a third-placed finisher, while a second-place finish would see them head to Toronto to face Portugal or Colombia.
Tuchel admitted he considered rotating his entire squad had England already secured top spot, but after a lackluster 0-0 draw with Ghana, he may still make changes. Speaking about possible rotation, he said: “I was not even sure if to do the full rotation [if England had beaten Ghana]. Maybe we would have. But I am not shy to do some rotation now. Some players should be on the pitch but maybe it will be more moderate. It’s not always fair if you just rotate your players in and say, ‘Okay, let’s perform.’ Let’s see.”
Tuchel praised the performance of centre backs and midfielder Elliot Anderson, noting: “I like, for example, the centre backs today. They were good together. I like Elliot Anderson, he had a step forward and a good performance, maybe a bit better than against Croatia.”
