Newcastle United's first six Premier League games have had a bit of everything, from the drama of an opening-day draw with Liverpool to the low of a 4-1 defeat at Coventry on Monday night.
Summer signings such as Sean Steur and Amar Dedic have made an instant positive impression, while Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Toure have had to wait for minutes. New head coach Matthias Jaissle has introduced a new formation and style, giving players like Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga a new lease of life, but many feel the current set-up is unsustainable.
A summer of upheaval
The dramatic summer saw eight arrivals and four big-name exits on the transfer front, plus the departure of Eddie Howe. Off the field, progress has been made on plans for a new training ground, but there is still no indication of a decision over a new stadium or an expansion of St James' Park.
Injuries have hampered Jaissle, with eight first-team players ruled out of the 2-1 win over Hull City. With big names starting to return, the question is where they fit in and who drops out.
Looking ahead to Aston Villa
United face Aston Villa on Saturday needing a positive response to the Coventry defeat. Jaissle has insisted he saw signs of improvement despite the scoreline at the CBS Arena, and he is unlikely to change his formation at this stage.
